Implant FAQ's
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are screw-like root portion replacements for missing teeth made from titanium. Because of titanium’s extraordinary properties, a dental implant is able to fuse with the jawbone and becomes a good form of support for the replacement of teeth. There are several kinds of dental implant options. In some cases, replacement teeth may be removable. In other cases, teeth are permanently affixed inside the mouth, like natural teeth. Dental implants may replace one single tooth, multiple teeth, or all the teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw. When needing to support and entire arch for a denture, four implants are all that are required.

Q. How are implants better than dental bridges or dentures?
A. When the root portion of a natural tooth is missing, the jawbone (surrounding the root) can shrink, making a person’s face sag, which may appear older than it actually is. Dental implants prevent the jawbone from deteriorating. Therefore, allowing for a more youthful look. Dental implants look and perform more like natural teeth. They are placed within the bone. No need for artificial plastic covers on the roof of the mouth, and the need for adhesives and denture creams are eliminated. Unlike a dental bridge, where adjacent teeth must be filed down, dental implants do not interfere with healthy neighboring teeth.

Q. Are dental implants painful and do they cause sensitivity?
A. Our patients usually report far less pain and than they expected with a quicker healing time. We recommend mild pain relievers for 2 or 3 days after the procedure, and after that, patients are usually pain-free. Sensitivity is typically not an issue. Majority of our patients are able to eat solid food on the day of surgery. You will be eating, laughing, smiling and enjoying everyday activities as if you just grew a brand new set of natural teeth.

Q. If I need to replace all of my teeth, or only my uppers or lowers, or if I already wear a full upper or lower denture, what treatment options can be recommended?
A. While there are several different treatment options available, the new “All-on-4” implant solution is the one that brings our patients closest to feeling like they have their own natural teeth.

Q. What is the “All-on-4” implant solution, and why is it becoming such a popular dental treatment alternative?
A. All-on-4 is achieved by using 4 dental implants to secure a “rocky” denture.
Witch allows for a full-arch tooth replacement procedure, providing vast improvements over conventional dentures. It is the most simple, most economical way that can have a full arch of non-removable, fixed, replacement teeth done all in one day. They look like natural teeth and sit very securely with no need for adhesives. Your new teeth will not rub or create sore spots, and they cannot slip or fall out. You can fully taste and enjoy all of your food because the roof of your mouth is no longer covered with acrylic plastic. Dentures permanently placed do not need to come out at night. You can eat whatever you like with full confidence. You can smile naturally, knowing your teeth look real. You can get “same-day teeth” even if extractions are required. All these factors make All-on-4 the preferred treatment solution for people facing or already wearing dentures.

Q. How can I clean my “permanent” teeth if I cannot remove them?
A. Your teeth can be cleaned with a water pick and toothbrush. It is as simple as that.

Q. Do you perform bone grafting if there is not enough bone support to hold the implants in place?
A. Even if the bone has receded, the All-On-4 procedure can usually be performed without the need for bone grafting because of the extraordinary way the implants are placed. This is often not the case for alternative dental implant techniques. We frequently meet patients, who have been told by their health care professionals, that they require dental bone grafting due to lack of jaw bone. They are delighted to hear that with the All-On-4 dental procedure, bone grafts are usually unnecessary. However, each case is determined on an individual basis by the dentist.

Q. Can the age of the patient be a problem?
A. The health of a patient is more a determining factor than their age. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth removed, you are probably healthy enough to receive a dental implant. Dental implant treatment may not be recommended for patients suffering from some chronic illnesses. An examination by one of our dentists, along with a review of your dental and medical records, will help to determine whether you qualify for a dental implant procedure. Most patients do qualify than not.

Q. If I’m a smoker, can I still get a dental implant?
A. Yes, you may. Many of our successfully treated patients have been smokers. There is an increased risk of possible complications with active smokers, especially in procedures involving dental bone grafting. This will be discussed with you during your consultation.
