Periodontal Disease & Treatment
The primary cause of adult tooth loss in the US, periodontal disease affects more than 35 million Americans. Food particles, bacteria, and hardened plaque (tartar) can irritate the gums and cause gum infection, which is also known as gum disease. The condition begins with insignificant swelling and redness, and sometimes tenderness, of the gums. Some affected patients' gums bleed when they brush their teeth. Gingivitis, the early stage, can go undetected if a patient avoids regular checkups and cleanings. As it advances, periodontal disease can cause gum recession, bone loss, tooth loss, and it has been linked to stroke, heart attack, low-weight births, premature births, and diabetes complications.
Dr. Botbol and his hygiene team will check your gums for periodontal disease at your checkup or cleaning appointment. If they find that you are at risk, they will suggest preventive measures. Should they detect gingivitis or periodontitis, they will recommend periodontal therapy. Our in-office therapy includes scaling, root planing, and Arestin antibiotic treatments. We may suggest soft tissue laser therapy to remove damaged gum tissue, which will promote generation of new, healthy tissue. Advanced periodontitis may require a specialist, in which case we refer patients to a trusted periodontist for optimal care.
