How to Choose a Cosmetic Dentist

Many general dentists offer cosmetic dental services, but the ADA does not recognize "cosmetic dentist" as a true specialty like an orthodontist (for straightening teeth) or endodontist (root canals and other inner-tooth procedures). Any dentist can use the label "cosmetic dentist," so how are you supposed to know how to choose a qualified, competent, efficient, and effective cosmetic dentist?

Some cosmetic procedures are irreversible, so you need a great dentist who can offer great results. Follow these tips when trying to determine which cosmetic dentist is right for you:

  1. Learn about the procedures you want to have, so you can ask your cosmetic dentist informed questions and know whether the answers make you comfortable.
  2. Interview or consult with two or more cosmetic dentists before selecting one to work on your smile.
  3. What is the dentist's education in regards to cosmetics? Has he invested in hands-on continuing education classes to learn the latest techniques?
  4. Ask to see a portfolio or before and after gallery of the dentist's actual patients. Look at cases that are similar to your own. Do you like the results?
  5. How long has the dentist used his/her current whitening system, dental laboratory, or new technology? Is he/she experienced?
  6. Don't fall for gimmicks. If a dentist indicates that everything is too easy and that you'll have no recovery period after invasive procedures, you may want to seek another opinion.
  7. Choose a dentist with whom you feel comfortable. Extensive smile procedures require multiple visits, so you need to establish a comfortable rapport with your cosmetic dentist.
  8. Find a dentist who will listen to your ideas and concerns, then address them in his/her treatment plan. You are the most important factor in your smile makeover!
  9. Don't be afraid to ask for references!
  10. Take a guided tour of the office and inspect the sterilization area, ask about technology the dentist employs, and make sure you feel comfortable before agreeing to treatment.

Dental Bonding

Eliminate smile imperfections such as cracked, chipped, or gapped teeth with cosmetic bonding. Dr. Botbol can tint composite dental resin to match your teeth, apply the resin to your imperfections, and then artistically sculpt your ideal smile. Composite resin lasts about seven to ten years if cared for properly. While bonding does not offer the longevity of porcelain veneers, it can transform a smile in just one or two office visits.
